The Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) is entering in full scale for the tourist boat operations in Kuttanad and backwaters of Alleppey with a low-cost tour package, buoyed by the positive response to its recently launched tourist boat service on the Alappuzha-Kumarakom route in catamaran VEGA.
A week after its launch, guests from as far away as Malappuram and Kozhikode are taking advantage of the tourist service aboard Vega, a new vessel that travels at 25 kmph as opposed to the 12 kmph of ordinary ferries, according to the director of SWTD. “The day-long return tour costs 400INR in non-AC space and 600INR in AC cabin. A single trip is half the price. Kitchen on board has prepared a lunch for 100 people, including seafood and tapioca”.
The vessel travels from Alappuzha to Punnamada, Muhama, Kayipuram, Pathiramanal, and Kumarakom, connecting two popular tourist destinations. Reservations can be made by calling 94000 50325.

A cruise from Kochi
The Transport Department agency has launched an e-ender to build a similar 120-seat vessel, dubbed Vega 3, to ferry tourists through the backwaters off Kochi.
“According to our preliminary schedule, tours lasting two and a half hours can be arranged from Marine Drive, connecting pristine tourism locales such as Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, Willingdon Island, Vypeen, Bolghatty, and Kadamakudy. “Because there are so many private boat operators in Kochi, the tariff will be very competitive,” Mr. Nair said.
Guests will be able to choose between AC and non-AC cabins here as well.
The proposed catamaran (double hull) vessel, according to SWTD Ernakulam Traffic Superintendent M. Sujith, will be able to cruise up to the sea that borders Puthuvype, unlike most single-hull private tourist boats, which cannot operate beyond Fort Kochi. “A dinner cruise and up to four cruises can be arranged. “The price per person could be as low as 200INR,” he said.
Given the success of the Vega 1 ferry, which was launched over two years ago on the Vaikom-Ernakulam-Fort Kochi route, the SWTD placed additional orders for the Vega series boats. It takes less than 15 minutes to travel from the city to Fort Kochi, compared to about an hour by bus.
