The journey from Alapuzha to Kottayam by SWTD boat is an enjoyable one. The fare for a round trip of two hours is only Rs 25.
The state-operated boats make stops at roughly 40 locations. Since the people who live in these swampy regions have no other option for getting around, boat transportation is provided at a minimal cost. The boats are, in fact, extremely basic, with barely even wooden teak floors, and coir seats.
The boats goes till Kodimatha, the central SWTD station in Kottayam which is about 3 kilometres away from Kottayam Bus Station.

*80KM distance to be covered. The boat leaves Alleppey and Kollam at 10:30 in the morning and arrives at its destination at 18:30 in the evening. Remember to account for the travel time.
* Upper deck seats are comfortable and partially opened.
* There is a fairly basic restroom on board the boat, and both the lunch and tea stops have facilities for using the restroom.
* The boat makes a pit stop along the way at a lakeside cafe for lunch and tea.
The upper deck is more crowded because the majority of passengers chose to sit there because it offers a superior view of the surroundings and is ideal for taking photographs.
* Due to the length of the trip, it is not appropriate for everyone, and it is especially inappropriate for families with young children. Despite this, travelling through the backwaters of Kerala in this manner is among the most enjoyable ways to do so.
As of March 7, 2023, the boat trip between Alleppeyand Kollam will be temporarily suspended due to river dredging. This is the latest news in this regard.

Shikkara Rentals
The Shikara is a type of boat made of wood that was traditionally used in Jammu and Kashmir. These days, however, it is also commonly seen in Alleppey and Kumarakom. There is a large bed on which you can relax, a cover that will protect you from the sun and rain, and an engine that will allow you to move about. The number of seats ranges from five to twenty-five, depending on the size of the boat.
