Revi Karunakaran was the architect of the modernized coir industry of Kerala. Betty Karan, wife of the late eminent rope industrialist Ravi Karunakaran, founded Kerala’s largest private museum (30,000 square feet). Ravi Karunakaran’s father, rope industrialist K.C. Karunakaran, and his mother, Margaret, a German, have a large art collection here, including works brought back from foreign countries by Ravi Karunakaran and Betty. A ‘Buick Super’ car imported to India in 1948, a 24-karat gold-inscribed tea set, a Chinese dressing table, century-old Meissen sculptures, limited-edition Swarovski crystal sculptures, a traditional Papua New Guinea statue, a porcelain portrait of the Sar family, and Dasavatar in ivory, to name a few.
It also has a mural of India’s cultural heritage covering an area of 200 square feet.
