Getting around Alleppey

Houseboats, Ferry's, trains, buses and taxis

There are a lot of ways to get around Alleppey backwaters without a car. You can take private or public transport to get wherever you want to go.

If you want to travel between the villages in Alleppey (like Kainakary, Chennamkary, Pulincunoo, Champalulam, Kavalam, Edathua, etc.), buses and boats are great ways to get around.

From the rural settlements in the middle of Kuttanad, Boats are the best way to explore the villages on the southern side of Upperkuttand, like Champakulam. This will take an hour. But if you want to move along the eastern side (Edathua, Veeyapuram, payippad, Karichal, Thakazhi, etc.), bus and taxi are probably your best bet.

You can take a train to Alleppey from both south and north of Kerala. This is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to get to Alleppey from anywhere in Kerala or India. There are both public and private ways to get to the train stop, and it’s not too far from the ferry, which is run by both the government and private companies.

Lastly, here are a few things to remember:

Boats don’t run after dark.
There aren’t that many public bus rides.
Book taxis ahead of time, especially during busy times.

Alleppey is a real piece of beauty in Kerala. People come from all over the world to visit, especially from late October to late February, which is the high season. If you can, you should try to visit Alleppey in the off-season, like from April to October, to have a more relaxed and authentic trip.

You can get to Alleppey from any part of Kerala in many ways. It all depends on your travel needs, such as the town that you wish to visit, your departure point and your means of transport. However, it is possible to reach most of the location on Alleppey without a car by using a combination of public transportation.

There are two airports close by: ochin International Airport and Trivandrum International Airport. It is 75 km from Cochin to Alleppey and 151 km from Trivandrum to Alleppey. Once you get to one of the airports, you can take a cab to Alleppey.
